SWEET AND SOUR

I stand in front of my closet for longer than usual as I try to work out what to wear for Zane’s special date. What does a girl wear when she’s trying to exact revenge on her enemy? Heels, or no heels? Killer red dress, or girl-next-door jeans and shirt combo?

I can only guess that Zane has been seducing me to lower my defenses, then stress me out enough to force me to take his deal. It’s the classic pincer move. The whole time, he’ll be looking like a hero.

I’m just kicking myself for not seeing it happen right before my eyes.

Annie is probably his partner in crime.

For all I know, she’s the one who’s been sending me crates of fish. Maybe she’s feeding Zane secrets by posing as a customer and listening to my conversations with Joyce?

My imagination runs wild as every detective show I’ve seen flashes across my mind’s eye.

I know Zane’s type.

He’s a red-blooded alpha male, used to getting his own way. To him, women are disposable and can be easily manipulated by a little romance.

As soon as he gets his hands on my bakery, he’ll toss me aside like his phone and go after the next shiny object that catches his eye.

Well, I’m on to you, Mr. Masters.

I opt for the red dress and a pair of black stilettos. It’s the sexiest outfit I own, and also the most uncomfortable. But needs must.

Operation: Seduce and Slap, is in motion.

I’ll lull him into a false sense of security, make him think he’s won me over, and then slap him with a heavy dose of reality.

The poor guy won’t even see it coming.

After telling her my plan, Connie comes round to the idea of torturing Zane and offers to help me prepare. I’m so grateful. If I’m left to my own devices, all I’ll do is scoop my hair back into a ponytail. It’s not exactly a super sexy look on me, and I need to look my best. So, I’m going to let my hair down tonight. Literally.

Connie curls my hair and brushes it out to make soft golden waves that flow down and rest below my shoulders. The door buzzes just as I’m applying my nude lipstick and I jump back from the mirror, my black lashes fluttering.

“How do I look?” I ask Connie. I do a little twirl and jazz hand dance. Connie cocks her head to the side and studies my appearance. “You look... gorgeous.” Then she makes a chef’s kiss. “My work here is done.”

“Right. I can do this,” I say through a breath, smoothing out my dress.

Connie rests her hand on my shoulder and gets right into my space. Her nose hovers inches from mine. “If at any point you feel uncomfortable, call me. I’ll come and get you.”

Her seriousness makes me giggle. “Thanks, Connie. What would I do without you?”

The buzzer goes off again and my heart jolts; my stomach is full of butterflies.

“Okay. It’s show time.”
